Senior artists, crafters earn honors

Care Center Sterling Heights residents enter their art in the fair

Area senior citizens were well represented among the thousands of exhibitors who entered homemade, handmade and homegrown items in the 2008 Easter Sierra Tri-County Fair. According to Fair Facility Marketing Director Tawni Thomson, more than 4,200 items ranging from fruits and vegetables to textiles and handicrafts to fine art and photography-were entered into this year’s event Among the exhibitors who showed off their artistic talents were several residents of the Bishop Care Center on West Line Street (some of them as olds as 92) and Sterling Heights Assisted Living Facility on East Pine Street in Bishop.

 Many of those seniors also took home awards and other recognition for their efforts. Sterling Heights residents Lloyd Young entered five paintings, both oil and watercolor. He won two first-place awards, two second-place ribbons and one Honorable Mention. Olive Unkrich of Sterling Heights, won two first-place ribbon for her “Goose Girl” counted cross-stitch. Fellow resident Edna Lynn-Wright also earned a first-place award for her Brother and Sister dolls, and a second-place ribbon for her fashion doll.

The Sterling Heights Crafters received first place for their Christmas table decoration, and also made and entered a beautiful Christmas tree shirt. Bishop Care Center residents also earned ribbons for their projects. Susan Noble received an Honorable Mention, Lorraine Christensen received both a second-place and third-place ribbon, Eleanor Paton won a first-place ribbon and Honorable Mention Awards.
